07 August, Colombo: Aiming to improve the ease of doing business and accelerate digital transformation, Sri Lanka’s investment promotion agency, the Board of Investment (BOI), announced the completion of the integration of the visa recommendation system.

The system completed in coordination with the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Ministry of Defense provides online visa recommendation for potential investors visiting Sri Lanka and all businesses that fall under the jurisdiction of the BOI.

The BOI had already completed the online system to the point where the investors/companies could submit the visa application online and get the application approved from the BOI. For this, investors had to make three physical visits to the BOI headquarters. However, with the integration with the Department of Immigration, investors no longer need to visit the BOI at all.

Under the newly launched system, visa recommendations will be granted in three visa categories, namely entry visas, residence visas and when extending visas. Also, the applicants, who will be eligible to apply, are the investor, the employees and dependents of the investor, and the selected employees.

One of the main advantages for investors/companies of the new system is the elimination of the physical presence of investors at the BOI, which saves them time. Investors can also monitor the online portal and review the status of the process.

Once the process is complete, applicants will be notified via SMS and email alerts. Then, applicants can bring the passport and relevant documents to the immigration department where the visa will be issued to them. In addition, this system will also protect against abuse in the submission of information, up to the strict evaluation.

Speaking on the occasion, BOI Director General Renuka M Weerakone said the implementation of the online visa referral system is another step in the journey of digitization of the whole of the country. experience of investors to ensure seamless delivery of services to investors.

“Here, allow me to make a special mention to the officials of the Department of Immigration, the Ministry of Defense and our IT team for their competence and their ability to make the whole process a success,” said- she pointed out.

“The BOI hopes that this system will reduce the inconvenience faced by investors/companies and further strengthen the digital transformation of work with relevant agencies and ministries. Additionally, we are happy to hear feedback on the process and make any necessary adjustments if there are any shortcomings,” added Ms. Weerakone.
