State Department Gets 2020 Diversity Visa Deadline

By Mike LaSusa (Oct 13, 2021, 5:59 p.m. EDT) – The US State Department must issue more than 9,000 additional diversity visas by October 2022, a DC federal judge ruled on Wednesday, describing the deadline as a compromise between the shortest time desired by visa holders and the longest desired by the government.

U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta said his order “strikes the right balance” between the 2020 Diversity Visa Lottery winners’ request that the State Department process all additional visas by January 2022 and the State Department’s assertion that the agency should not have to start processing visas until October 1, 2022.
