Ride Hailing 101 Workshop via Zoom: 12:30 p.m. July 27. Learn how to use Uber at the Ride Hailing 101 workshop. Marie Foster from the TRIPPS program, and Jane Gould, a transportation planner and author of “Aging in Suburbia,” will introduce participants to ride-sharing using Uber, answer questions, and help you download the app (for those with a smartphone). August Movie: Showing the movie “Yesterday,” rated PG, two hours at noon Aug. 13 at the senior center. Sit back, relax and enjoy our AC and the movie on our big screen projector. While he’s still looking for his next big break, musician Jack Malik gets hit by a bus during a global blackout. When he wakes up, he finds out he’s the lone person on Earth who knows of the Beatles and all of their songs. Open to the first 15 people that sign up by calling the Senior Center at 978-443-3055. 

Ice Cream Social: Stop by the Sudbury Senior Center at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 18 for some ice cream and all the toppings. Let us know you are coming so we can buy enough ice cream for everyone to enjoy! Call the senior center at 978-443-3055. 

Meet and Greet: Meet the new Town Nurse Patricia Moran at the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25. Patricia will bring information about the upcoming flu season and would like to hear about your health concerns as we enter the fall. Money Management Program: BayPath is offering a money management program to assists people 60 and over, as well as people with disabilities who have difficulty managing their day-to-day finances. Clients benefit from free assistance with bill-paying, budgeting, reading mail and advocating with service providers. With the support of BayPath’s Money Management volunteers, elders receive the targeted help they need for improved stability and prolonged independence. Certain income and asset guidelines may apply. Volunteers are background checked, trained and supervised by BayPath staff. If you want to sign up or have further question regarding this program, please call Sue from BayPath at 508-573-7241. 

Dial a-Ride: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rides are also available to Framingham to catch the Boston Hospital Shuttle on Tuesdays: early morning, return midday or early evening. 

If you’re a registered van rider, please call the MWRTA call center at 508-820-4650, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays to schedule a ride. Reservations must be made at least two business days in advance.

Walk Massachusetts Challenge: Lace up your sneakers, the Walk Massachusetts Challenge is back until Sept. 30. This year features more walking options and more prizes! Baypath Elder Services’ LGBTQ+ Initiative: Baypath Elder Services is committed to providing and promoting informed, respectful and welcoming services to MetroWest’s rainbow community, particularly older adults, persons with disabilities and caregivers. From offering LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings to organizations, agencies and community groups, to helping LGBTQ+ older adults find information, support and get connected with services, to hosting intergenerational conversations with weekly online events, we are here to invite everyone to join us and be fully present as their whole, wonderful, authentic self!

Dementia Friendly Sudbury Action Team: Dementia Friendly Sudbury Action Team is working to make our community more welcoming to residents with dementia and their families. Dementia Friendly Sudbury strives to create a community that addresses the needs of our residents, advocating for dementia awareness and providing services, programs and public spaces that support people with dementia and their care partners. Each dementia friendly community is different, but all dementia friendly communities share these goals: 

• To make their community inclusive, welcoming those touched by dementia to continue to be active, contributing citizens. 

• To be informed, safe and respectful of individuals with the disease, their families and caregivers 

• To provide supportive options that provide quality of life 

• To foster the ability of people living with dementia to remain in community and engage and thrive in day to day living 

The team has also begun offering Dementia Information Sessions to town staff and community members, as well as outreach on Dementia Friendly efforts to the business community. It only takes an hour to become a Dementia Friend, and from there it’s up to you how you turn your new understanding into action. 

Low Vison Support Group: We are happy to share that our low vison participants will be meeting in person at the senior center. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. You must sign-up in advance by calling the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055. Sudbury Care Pantry: The Sudbury Care Pantry exists to help neighbors in need get the personal care, laundry and household cleaning supplies that SNAP or WIC benefits don’t cover. If you need help email [email protected] A volunteer will reply with a checklist which will allow you to choose the items you need. Orders can be delivered to the recipient’s front door or picked up at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 1 Morse Road, Sudbury. 

Goodnow to Go: Goodnow to Go is a collaboration with the Sudbury Senior Center to supply library materials to Sudbury residents unable to travel to the library. 

This service will be provided free of charge to Sudbury residents of private homes, apartment buildings or assisted living facilities who are unable to travel to the library due to a temporary or permanent disabling condition. You will need a library card in good standing to participate. If you do not have one, we will help you with the process of obtaining one. 

A senior center volunteer will deliver materials to locations and return them to the library when circulation period expires. Materials will be selected by patron or by patron in discussion with Goodnow Library staff or senior center volunteer. Patrons wishing to use this service will fill out our Goodnow to Go form, indicating their relevant information and material preferences. You may return this form to the Goodnow Library in person, by email at [email protected], or mail it c/o Michael Briody to Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Rd., Sudbury, MA 01776.

Uber Clinic Technology Support, New Program: Clinic hours are from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Fridays. To offer assistance to those learning how to use Uber, we offer step-by-step instructions in the new Uber Community Service Guide created by Senior Center volunteers Jason Robbins and Dan Travis. If interested in being emailed this guide, contact the Senior Center or refer to our website. For additional support, we are excited to offer 30-minute time slots in our “Uber Clinics,” staffed by the Senior Center’s Technology Support Volunteers who will assist clients with issues relating to how to download and use the Uber application on his/her smartphone for use in the subsidized Go Sudbury! Uber Program. This support can be given by phone or remotely, and is by appointment only. Go Sudbury! Taxi Rides Program: We are delighted to share that the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission of Massachusetts is extending its emergency taxi grant funding, likely through December. The town of Sudbury has received sufficient funding to provide several rides per week (including wheelchair accessible vehicles). Both Tommy’s Taxi (Framingham) and JFK Transportation (Natick) will be used. This limited taxi rides program will be focusing on non-COVID-19 related healthcare appointments and vaccination appointments. 

Similarly, residents must meet one of the following qualifications: 50 years of age or older; 18 years of age or older with a disability that limits driving; active-duty military or veteran of the armed forces; resident with financial need; or essential worker requiring transportation for work. 

The ride service area is within Sudbury and up to 25 miles outside of Sudbury. All rides must begin or end in Sudbury. Service is provided to the Logan Express Shuttle in Framingham, but not to Logan Airport.

Go Sudbury! Uber Rides: The Go Sudbury! Uber Rides program is also a grant-funded, temporary program for Sudbury residents who meet the same qualifications of the Go Sudbury! Taxi program mentioned above. 

Transportation via Uber services and partially subsidized by the town of Sudbury is available for non-urgent healthcare and vaccination appointments, work, shopping and accessing community resources. There are three geographic areas in which transportation can be provided, each with a nominal copay per one-way ride: within Sudbury, $1 per ride; to/from towns contiguous to Sudbury, $2 per ride; and to/from destinations up to 25 miles outside of Sudbury, $10 per ride. 

You must have a private account with Uber on your smartphone for this service. Approved rides will be ordered via your Go Sudbury supplemental account, and the applicable copayments will be deducted from your personal credit card account with Uber. 

After you are approved as a Go Sudbury program participant, Uber will send you an activation email; once you are activated, you can begin using these services for the approved destinations.

Sudbury Connection Van Service Update: the Sudbury Connection Wheelchair Accessible Van Service, offered in conjunction with the Metro West Regional Transit Authority, will be running five days a week (excluding holidays). If you are a registered rider, please call the MWRTA Reservation Center at 508-820-4650, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Reservations must be made at least two business days in advance, and up to two weeks in advance. Holidays are not business days. Please have first appointment start at 9:15 a.m. or later if possible, and the last appointment start at 2:30 p.m. or earlier so that drivers have time for cleaning protocols before and after van service. 

If you would like to register, please contact the Senior Center (or MWRTA) for an application. When your application is approved you will set up a debit account for van fees. Van fees are $1 in town; $2 out of town for a one-way ride. 

Please note: appointments will be made on a first come, first serve basis and medical appointments take priority over shopping and errands, which may be changed at the discretion of the Senior Center director and or the outreach/ information specialist. Screening people who have been fully vaccinated is still necessary.

Grocery Shopping Volunteers Needed: We are in need of Grocery Shopping volunteers to food shop on a weekly basis for their matched senior in the town who does not have family or neighbors that can do it for them. Multigenerational Poster Project, Special Places: The Sudbury Senior Center is beginning a new intergenerational poster project in collaboration with the Goodnow Library. We want to create a way for all ages to come together to share and compare experiences. The goals of this project are to represent experiences all ages have shared over the past year, to represent our diverse community based on the range of ages, types of experiences and diverse identities, and to highlight the importance of “place” that we often take for granted. To participate in the project, the steps are simple. Access the link at https://bit.ly/3bW51qb. When you click the link, the questions and information about the purpose appears. You then fill in your responses (a few words or as long as you like). Then click “submit.” Responses will go to Goodnow Librarian Joanne Lee and she will add each response to the poster.
