Traditionally owned by the Kaurna people, the region that became Adelaide was selected by an eccentric Colonel William Light. His choice of location for the new town was controversial, and the Colonel stated that, “I leave it to posterity, and not to [my enemies], to decide whether I am entitled to praise or to blame.” It would seem, years later, his choice was an excellent one as Adelaide has grown to become a dense, richly appointed city thriving on local customs and a hedonistic undercurrent.
Founded by free settlers in 1836, the town began as a European-style capital and the constant influx of new settlers served to add to the city’s foundation and style. Today the thriving city boasts wide sweeping streets, city squares and lush green boundaries. Only a short ride away you’ll find native bushland hiking, surf lessons and wildlife hikes. The results are truly enchanting, but it is what exists within the currents of the city that make it truly special.
The people of Adelaide enjoy life is if it were the main course in a decadent meal. Fine foods, wines and art mix to titillate the senses. World-renowned events are held in the city and the live music and bar scene is more than respectable. The arts of the area are proudly displayed in many numerous galas capped off by the Adelaide Fringe Festival which illustrates the progressive yet conservative nature of the city as a whole. From music to sports, the people of Adelaide are passionate about their interests and causes and this dedication and flair for the entertainment of life make the city a sensory wonderland to explore.
