Take a trip off the mainland to experience the truly laid-back lifestyle of Hobartians. In fact, the residents of Hobart come perilously close to horizontal with the meandering pace through life that has affected the city. For those visitors intent on developing an ulcer and bringing on a triple bypass, Hobart will seem provincial and completely adept at wasting time. But for those with an appreciation of what a simple life and the naturally rich region have to offer, the brilliance of this town, its residents and their approach to the universe will ring true in its perfection.
Located on the island of Tasmania, Hobart is the second-oldest city in the country and the southernmost capital. The sprawl of the city reaches from the banks of the Derwent River up into the foothills of Mount Wellington. The town has been established for a very long time and the comfort and the duration of its residents is clearly evident in the rich cultural heritage and down-home, folksy atmosphere.
While you’ll find many urban bars and trendy nightspots, many of the Hobartians spend the afternoon and evening in one of the many excellent cafes trading jokes and watching the miniscule amount of traffic drive by. If you pick a good seat, you can also enjoy the warm summer breezes from the sea and watch the yachts sail across the river. Come early for coffee and breakfast and enjoy watching the thick fog lift to reveal the snowcapped peaks of the mountain as well.
